Public health system on brink of disaster, army medics on standby
The public health service is on the brink of disaster. The SA Medical Association, the country’s largest doctors’ union, yesterday backed a wildcat strike to push for better salaries.
Sama had previously condemned a strike by doctors affiliated to the breakaway United Doctors Forum. Now it says its members will effect “a total shutdown” of all state hospitals, clinics and laboratories from Monday.
In Gauteng, the situation is worse because paramedics and fire fighters in Johannesburg are already on strike.
